Although St. Patrick’s Day has come and gone, you can still learn about Boston’s Irish legacy with Beacon Hill Walking Tours. Thanks to John Feeley and Cheryl McDonald, both of Irish descent, this new idea may become a permanent tour later this spring and summer.
Owners and operators of Beacon Hill Walking Tours, the idea for an Irish tour coincided with St. Patrick’s Day, along with this year’s unseasonably warm weather.
Working together with Old Town Trolley Tours, the tour visited Boston’s North End, once considered the Irish neighborhood in the 1800s in Boston. The tour then continued through Boston, Charlestown and Beacon Hill, dropping some people off at Faneuil Hall and then returning to Northern Ave, in front of the ICA.
The tour revealed some of the hidden places where Boston’s most famous family, the Kennedy’s, had some of their famous moments, like the hotel where JFK proposed to Jacqueline Bouvier. The tour also reveals little-known tidbits about local Boston politicians, of Irish decsent, and their shenanigans to stay in power. Participants also learned about lesser-known Boston history such as:
- How did USS Constitution end up in Charlestown from Portsmouth?
- What heritage makes up the population of Charlestown?
- Who was the first Irish Catholic to attend Boston Latin?
- Who was the first Irish Catholic to attend Harvard Medical School?
- On what date did George Washington drive out the British?
If you don’t know the answers, take the tour to find out!
