Rockland Celebrates 75 Years of Windjammer Cruises

Windjammer in Full Sail in Rockland Maine

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the existence of windjammer cruises.

A windjammer parade is scheduled for July 15th followed by a free concert with Gordon Bok and Friends!  To celebrate the 75th anniversary of windjamming in America, the Maine Windjammer Association is pulling out all the stops to give windjammer guests and Rockland spectators an event to remember!

On July 15 from 2:00-4:00 pm, more than a dozen windjammers will participate in a Parade of Sail past the mile-long Rockland Breakwater. The afternoon event will include close-up views of the entire fleet, tours of the Lighthouse, a flyover by the Owls Head Transportation Museum and free shuttle service between Harbor Plaza and the Breakwater Parking area. For spectators who need a little help identifying vessels, former windjammer captain Jim Sharp will narrate the parade over a PA address system at the Lighthouse.

What are Windjammers, you ask? Windjammers are sail-only vessels that offer overnight accommodations to their guests. However, unlike motor yacht and sailboat charters, you don’t have to charter the entire vessel in order to partake of the experience. Here are just a few of the special cruises available:

Wine Tasting – Wine neophytes and seasoned oenophiles alike enjoy professionally guided samplings of vintages from around the world. Each glorious day of sailing ends with an informal, professionally conducted tasting. Offered by the schooners Stephen Taber and Mary Day.

Pirate Adventure Cruise – Sail away into the legendary world of spirited pirates, scallywags, and undesirables. Swashbucklers may be called upon to defend the ship by sword or cannon, or may be forced to walk the plank as they search for pirate treasure. Offered by the schooner Isaac H. Evans.

Whale, Puffin, and Naturalist Cruises – Our schooner captains have good luck finding finback, humpback, minke whales, as well as sightings of seals, pelagic birds and eagles; some cruises even offer puffin colony views. Offered by the schooners Mary Day, Angelique, Nathaniel Bowditch, American Eagle and Isaac H. Evans.

What a great way to experience all Maine has to offer: thousands of islands in Penobscot Bay, heart-stopping views, pristine nature and the nicest people you’ll ever encounter!

With 13 vessels to choose from, ranging from 46 feet to 132 feet, and each offering a number of packages, a plethora of choices are available for a Windjammer cruise. Plus, if there’s something you would like to see but don’t, please ask, they love to create a custom experience for their guests.
