Victoria Manor Hotel in Quebec City
A great way to see old Quebec City is to stay at the Victoria Manor Hotel in Quebec City. It’s only an 8-minute walk (uphill) from Quebec City’s Gare du Palais Train Station, but it’s well worth the hike.
You’re awarded with a breathtaking panorama of Quebec City, as well as a plethora of gourmet restaurants within walking distance. Plus, thanks to Quebec City’s ingenuity, you can hop on the Eco-bus and take a pollution-free tour of Quebec City on an electric bus.
Not to mention the Manor Victoria Hotel itself, once considered the best hotel in Quebec City at $1.50/night; back in 1830, this was top dollar. In 1895, the Victoria Manor changed hands, purchased by a Mr. Trudel, who enthusiastically constructed a covered overpass from his newly-acquired hotel to a popular Turkish bath across the street. Unfortunately, he didn’t obtain the necessary permits and authorization, which neighboring merchants resented. In the end, he spent his fortune justifying his actions, apparently dying of exhaustion from his doomed efforts.
His nephew purchased the hotel and added 3 stories to the existing building, elevating the status to the summit of its glory. The Victoria Manor became renowned for its elegance, gastronomy and personalized service.
In 1927, tragedy strikes an adjacent hotel, and the new owners seize the opportunity to further expand and modernize the Victoria Manor Hotel. Individual bathrooms are added to the new rooms, a ventilation system added for popular cigar-smoking and even telephones are installed in the rooms, an unheard of luxury for the times.
Today’s Victoria Manor offers the best of both worlds, modern conveniences with classic luxury. Ambiance fireplaces converge with whirlpool baths and free wifi in the rooms. A gourmet buffet breakfast at La Table du Manoir, a dip in the swimming pool or a luxurious spa treatment at the Spa du Manoir make for a perfect stay. Even by today’s standards, the Victoria Manor Hotel has kept its top rankings as one of the most elegant hotels in Quebec City.
